Career at a Regional Carrier instead of an Airline

No. Commercial airlines simply track scheduled flights. That is why the passenger manifests are confidential.

Oh okay that makes sense.

I almost thought about dropping out this past week…mental health got really bad. Any advice for me? Thanks.

Yes. Don’t make ANY major life decisions when your “mental health gets really bad”.

I don’t even make minor ones!

Hi everyone. I was just in the questions from highschoolers a couple days ago. Yes i’m a freshman, but i’ve been doing my research because when I get older I want to go to college and join atp to get some more hours. My end goal is to get to American, but there is only a cadet program for envoy, that then switches you over to American, after a couple years of being a FO or captain for envoy. I just want to know if there is anyway to just get right to American Airlines and not have to spend years in a regional carrier? Should I just not go through the excelerated program that Envoy/ American offers and just get a bunch of hours? Or should I just go through the program? I want to find the quickest way. I do keep in consideration that becoming a pilot does take a lot of time. Thanks!

Hate to answer a question with a question but it fits

If there was a shortcut around regionals, wouldn’t everyone take it?
Wouldnt that shortcut just become the norm, and with everyone going directly to a major, who would regionals hire?

And main one
Why would a major hire a new, untested CMEL and go thru the hassle of training them when there are thousands of tested and proven pilots with thousands of hours of 121 airline jet operating experience. Sure you can apply if you meet the minimums, but what reasons would a major have to even look at your applocation? Youd have better luck getting drafted into NFL straight out of high school

Cayden,

The biggest thing to consider is this is the airline industry. Things can and do change dramatically and it happens often. You’ve got 4yrs left of HS, 4 for college and then another 2 min to get trained and build your time. That’s 10yrs. Ten yrs is a VERY long time from now they may be no cadet programs or there may be many more. Maybe you will be able to go straight to American or American might have merged with Delta and no longer exists. Etc etc etc.

Again at your age you need to concern yourself with being a good student and keeping your nose clean. While no one can predict the future, I guarantee you it will not be the same as it is now.

Will the FAA make my autism a hindrance?

Brendan,

That’s a question for the FAA. You’ll need to discus with an AME (Aviation Medical Examiner). The big issue is usually if you’ve been on or are taking any medications.

I’m on 5 medications currently, and taking Zyrtec (allergies) as a preventative.

Then you most definitely need to consult with an AME. Only they can tell you for certain.

Brendan,

Ask yourself where do you want to be in 1 year? How about 5 years? Now with that vision in your mind would dropping out get you closer to that future or farther?

……keep your eyes on the goal and make decision that lead you in that direction.

So a thing I’ve realized is this: A part of me wants to pursue becoming a pilot, but another part of me wants people on here to say “Brendan this is not the profession for you, I suggest looking elsewhere.” I can’t explain it…

Brendan,

I’m sure you do BUT you ain’t getting off so easily. You’re an adult and these are decisions you need to make for yourself.

Adam

Gotcha.

Brendan,

Anything you do in this life, at this exact moment, is on you. People can tell you “oh, go do this or that;” however, only YOU can make that decision and determination to do whatever it is you desire. I strongly recommend, if you still have a lot going on, in the back burner, to figure that out before you dive to deep into a field that you’re questioning if it’s for you. If you’re going to pursue the flying field, you must be 100% committed, which many figure out to late and “waste” time & money. Time can’t be replaced, money can.

Well for me being a gate agent or ramp worker is always an option since I just want to be around planes.

Brendan,

Here’s an alternative way to get involved in the airline business, in the meantime (while you wait). If you’re unsure if flying is for you, snag a job at your local airport, FBO or airline ramp services, or a CSR position. Being around airplanes is one thing, but servicing and working on them, is another. Then when you find the “this is the time” in your heart to become a pilot, then you take that to the next step. It builds on that foundation. Many individuals that are now in-flight training once started out on the ramp or upstairs at the gate!
