Change in instructor location assignments

I just got word today from ATP admin that as of now, newly hired ATP instructors will be able to chose any location that they desire. This is great news for those wishing to instruct at a specific location.

That is awesome! Really alleviated a lot of concerns for my wife, kids, and I. Not to be a stick in the mud Adam, but do we know how this will effect student to instructor ratio, which will effect monthly flight hours and tuition reimbursement?

That’s so awesome to hear as I’m close to heading into training!

I have the same question as Daniel regarding instructor need at locations. Do you still have to consider that on your own when choosing where to instruct or is there a decent need for instructors at all locations right now?

Daniel,

ATP has followed this policy in the past as well, it tends to work itself out. Some CFIs are insistent that they need to work at a certain location and thus will stay there even if it means slightly lower monthly flight times. Other CFIs that simply want to get to the airlines the fastest will go to whatever locations are busiest and need instructors. It all balances out.

It seems clear that this was an issue for enough pilots that ATP decided to revert to their old system. Yes that will mean that there will be busier locations than others but how would/could ATP manage that? By not giving the students (who are paying for the training) a choice? You can’t have you cake and eat it too. Told ya.

Chris and Adam,

Thanks again for always answering our questions, I’m glad to hear that ATP has used this in this past. And Adam if that’s the case then I’ll go wherever I need to, in order to eat cake, even if it’s somebody else’s. Or, I’ll ensure I have an amazing experience as a student that will inspire others to come and realize their dream of being a pilot. (I hope they have enough dreams to get me to 1500 TT.):man_pilot::woman_pilot:

This is awesome! I’ll be able to save money on housing if I had to go somewhere besides Concord. I’ll be able to stay at home and drive back and forth.

I just wanted to reply to this post as I have been told something different from ATP and I am in the process of selecting a location. I was told you can select any location that is open. Not any location that you desire. So Denver is full right now instructor wise and they won’t let me select that location. So there may need to be some clarification on this post.

Gabe,

I spoke with ATP admin and confirmed that instructors can choose any location they want. This is a new policy, so there might have been some confusion on it.

This is great news. I posted about this about a month ago and was one of the reasons I was no longer considering flight school. I may have to reconsider.

How long is this expected to last?

Nicolas,

There is no projected end date to this new policy.

This is great news for me and my wife and children! Thank you!

Good news for sure! I’ll write up an introduction soon but I’ve been lurking in the shadows and now have from all appearances have identified the finances for schooling at ATP through unconventional means but a lower APR

So is this good news for people like me who want to go to the busiest location and not just a convenient location?

Lynn,

You’ll be able to choose a location that has been HISTORICALLY busy, but no
one can promise that you will be busy when you get there.

Lynn,

The head of the company wrote a post addressing this issue about a year ago in which he said there’s really no way of predicting “busiest”. Training locations (much like the airlines) are by nature dynamic. Locations get hot and cold and after 30+ yrs in business, even ATP themselves cannot predict which is (will be) the busiest location. ATP does a very good job of balancing this out but sometimes it’s just impossible. I chose TTN because it was close to home. It was in fact one of the smallest locations and least trafficked. Because of that at the time there were only 2 of us and we had more than we could handle. In short you should choose a location that you like or works best geographically. It’ll all balance out in the end.
