Pilots bid their bases when they are hired. This means that all of the available bases will be made known to the new hire pilots and they can chose from amongst the available positions. Every few months the airline will have a new bid and all pilots at the company can bid on available positions. Bidding is based strictly off of seniority.
Yes, a pilot can be forced out of a base if the base is downsized or reduced. It does not happen often, but it does happen.
