While it’s be nice to not need to build to 1500 hours, it would also flood the market and drive salaries right back down…not to mention safety and experience.
Exactly. The 1500 hour rule and some other post Colgan-air changes were good for the industry and pilots. More reasonable salaries, rest requirements and higher margins of safety with more experience required. There’s got to be a better answer than going backwards…
The acting FAA administrator explained on Freakonomics that the changes made, in whole, has resulted in no major mishaps in the airline industry in the past 10 years. You can interpret from the conversation that their assessment does not support reducing requirements to meet pilot shortages.
