Should I only take Sporty’s online ground school and study on my own or should I go to a class ground school with a teacher in the same room?

That really depends on you and your learning style. If you can learn sufficiently on your own, then stick with just the online. If you find that you need more instruction, then sign up for an online class. Of course if you are training outside of ATP, you should follow your instructor’s recommendations.

Are you talking about preparing for your FAA Knowledge exam or actually learning what you need to know to be a safe pilot? The Knowledge exam is rote knowledge so I’d save my money there. As for really understanding the “rules of the road” (or sky) ground school can be a very valuable and necessary part of the process. Ultimately as Chris said I’d speak with your instructor or flight school and get their recommendation.
