Heading to CFI school

Hey guys, I’m heading to Vegas for CFI school on the 6th. I only have my FIA written to get out of the way before I go(should have it done by early next week). I know this will be an intense couple of weeks, and I’m looking forward to it. I’m trying to be as prepared as I can be going into this. I have all the CFI modules completed and I still have to compile lesson plans before I go. What advice could you give me before I go? What specifically should I focus my effort on? I want to make sure I arrive well prepared.

Robert,

Just study and try to learn as much as you can. The examiners can ask about absolutely anything, so just look over anything and everything. I know that is absolutely no help, but that is the best advice that I have.

Lol thanks Chris, I appreciate the honest advice. I’ll keep studying and try not to panic.

Hey Robert,

Congrats on making it this far! That’s a huge accomplishment.

To be quite honest, the only thing that should be new to you is FOIs and
endorsements.

Do you have AC 61.65F yet?

Hey Tory I do not have that AC yet, do you suggest I have a printed copy or is a digital copy ok? As far as the FOI’s go I’m getting more comfortable with that info. ATP provides lesson plans, will those be sufficient or will I have to create more in addition to those?

Print it. When Tony (VGT Manager) gives his endorsement lesson you’re going
to want to be able to write on it. As far as FOIs go, there’s no easy trick
to learning those. What worked for me was studying with my classmates. We
would practice teaching to each other.

Also, remember that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed during your first week
of CFI school. Keep your head down, work hard, stay out of the casinos,
work together.

Tory, all good bits of advice. Thank you, I appreciate it!

You’re welcome! Keep us posted while you’re there and let us know if you
have any more questions or just need someone to vent to

Well as it turns out, instead of Vegas I’ll be heading to Jacksonville, FL for CFI training. I’m actually happy about it, it will be nice to see a cloud or two and not endless desert in every direction. Has anyone had any experience there?

Robert,

I spent quite a while in JAX (actually CRG). Great town. You can visit the home office and see where it all started. Great flying down there. No mountains but lots of BIG CBs in the summer! You’ll have fun.

Robert,

I did my CFI training at CRG. The weather is usually pretty good for flying and there are a lot of instructors and airplanes there to get you up in the sky.

Is there a subset of ATP locations which have CFI training or is it offered at all?

Scot,

The CFI training is only offered at a few locations. I want to say Vegas, CRG, ATL, DAL and PHX but I could be mistaken? Danielle? Chris?.. Anybody?

Adam

Robert,

Where did you do your training? It appears that a lot of people from out west (west of the Mississippi) are being sent to Jacksonville for CFI school. I know 4 people who did their training out west but were sent to Jacksonville for CFI school.

Scott,

Right now CFI training is offered in Vegas (VGT) and Jacksonville (CRG). I am not aware of any other location that offers CFI training. That would be a question for admissions. 800-255-2877.

In addition to Vegas and Jacksonville, Atlanta (LZU) does training there. The only problem with LZU is that once you finish ground school, you have to travel down to Jacksonville to take the checkride. Some people don’t like that, but it is what it is.

What @E-Kopps just mentioned is becoming more common. Inconvenient, but probably get it done faster that way.

Erik, I’m training out in Phoenix at the IWA facility. I missed the previous CFI class by 2 days and know they were sent to VGT. I was told there are just too many people attending CFI class right now for me to go to Vegas. I consider myself lucky to get this opportunity. I’ve enjoyed every experience thus far, and welcome the challenge. The dry heat of Phoenix compared to the overwhelming humidity will be a bit of a shock I’m sure. Lol

So you’re doing your CFI training at IWA?

Erik, I am going to Jacksonville for CFI training, all of my other training was done at IWA(Phoenix).
