Hey guys I was just wondering how bases work with pilots. My first question is who pays for the base? Do the airlines pay for it or the pilots have to? Also if a pilot wants to commute do they still automatically get assign a base? The next question is how big are the bases? Is it only big enough for you or is it big enough for a whole family?
John,
These are not based like the military has. A pilot “base” simply means an airport where you report to work each trip. Hence “being based” someplace.
Yes, everybody is based somewhere.
The airlines do not provide housing, nor do they care where you live. You could live at The Biltmore or under a bridge, the airlines really does not care as long as you show up to work on time. They pay you a salary, it is up to you to find housing for yourself and family.
