First and foremost thanks to the mentors who take the time to respond to all of us aspiring pilots. I started my PPL with a mom and pop operation in my local area(maybe 15 hours). I went ahead at got my first class medical and it was approved, however now I am looking at atp and a career in avaiation. My concern is that I guess I forgot to disclose a dui charge when answering my Medex. This was 20 years ago, different lifetime and different person ago. I have been reading through the forum and it reminded me that I do have this on my record. I know very foolish of me to forget this info. Now that I am looking at a career change, when I apply for another and disclose this will it hurt my medical certificate. Once again I know this is totally irresponsible of me but this is the situation I find myself in.
Cody,
It can and it will. I know a pilot who did the same thing. It showed up 15yrs later and he nearly lost ALL his certificates and his airline job.
You need to disclose and get this straightened out.
Adam
Adam,
Do you have any advice as to how I would disclose this? Or would I simply wait until it was time to renew and disclose then? Thanks for your input and time.
That’s a question for your AME.
Adam
Cody,
You should talk to your AME of the FAA Airmen Certification Branch, I would start with your AME and do it sooner rather than later. You want to be the one to disclose it, not have the FAA find out about it.
Chris
Thanks for the input Chris.

A few weeks have gone by now, I have submitted all documentation I can locate about this. Airman’s statement, court docs etc. I called medical examiner today to ask what to do at this point. He explained that he did not defer but has submitted all of these documents to the FAA. my question now is do I sit back and wait for a final approval letter(if that’s even the case)? I am hesitant about signing up yet because I do not want to start program all to have the FAA rescind my medical a few months from now.
Cody,
If you are speaking of signing up at ATP, they will not allow you to do so until you have a First Class Medical, no responsible flight school should.
Now you sit back and wait, it will likely take several months to hear back from the FAA. You can always call the Airmen Certification Branch on the phone, or check online to see the status.
Chris
Chris,
See I have a first class medical in hand currently. I guess the question I have is do you receive notification from FAA that upon final review all is good? Or do you only receive notification if it has been rescinded. Not sure if you know the answer to the second question. Thanks again for your input.
Also, yes it will be atp that I am signing up for. I just logged onto my online account and it is in certification decision section. It states that Ames issued on the spot. In your opinion how likely is this to get rescinded?
Cody,
Id call the fine folks in Oke City:
FAA (405) 954-4821
Adam
Cody,
I cannot offer any opinion on your medical status. Think about it, even your AME cannot tell you as he had to send the information to OKC. I can say that I would not start flight training until your issue is fully resolved.
