Thanks to my travel passes with my airline, my girlfriend and I got to fly to Venice and back at no cost. Robin rode in lie -flat first class seat while I came over on a different flight and had a whole row of coach to myself. Pretty good way to spend a few days off.

There are numerous details, but essentially travel passes are free, space available (stand by) travel for your immediate family and potentially one extra friend (depending on the airline). So, there has to be empty seats, but it usually seems to work out rather well.
