Pilot Lingo

I saw this on Facebook and it has me wondering, what does V1 Rotate mean in aviation?
Thanks,
Wyatt

Wyatt,

V1 Rotate are the last 2 callouts made on takeoff. V1 (aka decision speed) is basically the speed an airplane reaches on the runway where an abort is no longer safe and the airplane must continue the takeoff regardless of ANY malfunction. The pilot flying will be looking outside for proper runway alignment so the pilot monitoring will call out “V1” when that speed is achieved. Rotation speed comes next (it can be V1 or greater) and that’s where the pilot monitoring will make the call out “Rotate” for the pilot to pull back and get the airplane airborne (rotation).

Adam,
Thank you. One more question to put in the memory bank
