In order to be a pilot do you need to know how to drive or have your driver’s license?
Maria,
There is no requirement to have your driver’s license to obtain your pilot’s license. That said if your goal is to fly professionally it will most certainly raise eyebrows and questions as to why?
Adam
Maria,
While there is no set requirement to have a vehicle driver’s license, you will most certainly need one as a pilot. While you are in training, you will need to be able to get to and from the training center at all hours of the day and night and when you are a pilot, you will need to be able to get to and from the airport at hours when public transit is not always available. So yes, you will need a driver’s license.
Chris
Maria,
No requirement but will make flight training logistically difficult. Plus, when you apply to an airline you have to submit your driving history. It would be quite a flag on your app if one wasn’t submitted and a topic of conversation as to why.

You have to be a US citizen and should have a passport. If you don’t have one, start that process asap. You can prove citizenship with a birth certificate in the time being. You’ll also need a first class medical and financing. If you haven’t taken an intro flight, you should do that as well.
I’m US citizen, i was born here in Connecticut. I also have both passports book and card. What’s “first class medical and financing?” The flight intro will i learn it in the ATP Academy?
Adam
Maria,
The First Class Medical is a medical certificate that airline pilots must hold and maintain. ATP requires all students hold a First Class because every student needs to know that they can hold one before they pay for training.
The medical exams are administered by an AME. The FAA’s website has a search engine to help you locate AMEs nearest you. Google is often a good source as well.
Financing refers to the cost of the program. If you can’t pay for the program out of pocket, you will need to apply for a personal loan to finance the cost. Loans are offered through Sallie Mae. ATP’s website has more info.
The intro flight is something that everyone should do before enrollment just to be absolutely sure that flying is truly something that they want to do. ATP’s website has more info.
