Real Answers from Real Pilots

I’m 43 1/2 years old, with 0 hours and looking at changing careers from a software engineer (which I hate) to pilot. I have wanted to fly since high school but the cost was prohibitive at the time. I then married my high school sweetheart (who I’m still happily married to) and started a family at the young age of 21. I then completed college with 2 B.S. degrees while working full time so flying was not a priority. Four children later and now that I’m in my forties (and likely having a midlife crisis) I wonder if having a career as a pilot is still possible for me or have i missed the boat. The upfront cost is significant, I will be taking a significant pay cut and my age limits my future earning potential. I’m perfectly fine working for a regional but am concerned about the pay. Plus I don’t see many with bases up here in the northeast unless I drive 6 hours to NYC or Newark. However, despite these concerns, I still have the itch and wonder if this change is exactly what I need!
