34year old Cop

Hey Kyle, I’ve been reading through your posts and they’re awesome. Congrats on the new job! I’m a current police officer in New York (NYPD) I have just over 8 years on and I’m looking to follow in your footsteps. Would love to talk and get some more insight and info if that’s cool, I just made my account on here and haven’t figured out how to private message

Mike,

This forum is not set up for private messages, so it is best to post your questions directly on here. The nice part about that is that other people, such as yourself, will benefit from the discussion.

Hey Mike,

Have you taken a discovery flight? If not, I’m not sure where in the city you live, but you have Islip, Caldwell and Morristown as some close ATP locations.

Mike,

While Kyle has responded, I’d like to chime in. I recommend you take a discovery flight and/or admissions flight with ATP so you can meet individuals like Kyle. While Kyle is an active member on the forum, you may be surprised who is former military/EMS that are active students in training centers. To add to Kyle’s list, you also have Islip, NY and Northeast Philadelphia, PA as a training center.

Yes I have actually taken two discovery flights. One on Long Island and another In Jersey. After those flights I knew I was hooked. My struggle is leaving this job being 8 years in already that’s why I was hoping to speak to you to get some insight on your journey

Mike,

Okay great, you at least got that part out of the way and know this is something you want to pursue. I have met a few former NYPD guys at the training center. All have been great guys, some of them made it through training and some did not pass their stage checks for whatever reason and were removed from the program. This is not to deter you or discourage you but to just give you the insight that training is not easy and not everyone is cut out for it. Having said that, it was an awesome experience. I was fortunate to live close to MMU so I was at the TC everyday. I have a very supportive wife who was able to support us financially during my training. I have a mortgage and bills so it was a bit of a risk taking a year off to train with 0 income coming in on my half. To be blatantly honest, it’s cliche to say if you work hard you can do it but you also have to be able to have some stick and rudder skills, be able to multi task etc. The only way to really know if this is something you can do is to actually go out and do it.
