Airline Pilot as DPE

Can an airline pilot be a DPE on their off days? I’m guessing airline contracts don’t allow that, but I was wondering. With the DPE shortage, it would be a great way for an airline pilot to earn some extra money and help the next generation of pilots come up through the ranks…

Jake,

Yes, and many are. However, the process to getting such a lucrative job is extensive and very competitive. Any outside flying hours would have to be reported and tracked through scheduling to ensure the pilot doesn’t exceed any FAR limits.

Jake,

This is a common thing; however, as Hannah mentioned, to become a DPE takes years and credible references. I spoke with a helicopter flight school to get my add-on completed, the individual is a captain at a major airline (not to name) and does DPE on the side.
