Need help don’t understand Anything

I just want to say I appreciate all the people here. I Love the questions and there replies. They answered most of my questions but a few, I still need help. I’m 17, I’m graduating high school by 5 months early and I want my career to be a pilot. I want to start as early as possible and wait no further. My current schedule is school in the morning and work from when I leave school until midnight or so. Here’s a few question I got!!!

It takes 18 months for this program right? Now when I start this program, is there a schedule set for me or do I pick my own?

When I do graduate how likely am I to land a job within the year or even less? Or do I need to go to college for the bachelors degree?

I don’t care about the salary because later in the end I know I’ll be making the dough, but does me not having a bachelors effect on who hires me? Or does experience matter more?

Last one if I set my mind straight and only focus on this how long until I’m actually flying a plane and making money, (this question includes during the time I’m training, looking for a job, and the job training me)

If anyone out there can answer anything that would be helpful. Whether 1 question or all of them. This would be much appreciated to understand more and know about this topic.
Thank you

Yousif,

First off I want to say you should not be contemplating going straight from HS to flight training. You’re going to need a Bachelors degree and it’s far easier to continue school and finish that off first rather then after training.
Second the program is only 7mos. After you complete the program you’ll then need to build the required 1500hrs to fly for an airline. The most common method is by flight instructing. Do well in the program and ATP will offer you a position but know it might not be at a location of your choice. If you’re unwilling or unable to relocate you’ll have to find a position on your own. Now to the rest of your questions:

  1. you and your instructor will work out a schedule but know the program is a full-time commitment. During the 7mos of training working is highly discouraged and can have detrimental effects on the outcome.

  2. there currently a pilot shortage in the US and its not expected to let up any time soon. You should have no problem getting a job instructing after you successfully complete the program. Again you will need a Bachelors degree so you should earn that first.

  3. the Regionals do not require a degree but the Majors want one. Not having a degree will severely limit your options and income.

  4. after the 7mos, completing the program you will be a Commercial pilot and will be able to get paid to fly as an instructor.

I strongly recommend you visit the FAQ section as we discuss all your questions and others in greater detail.

Yousif,

Adam answered your questions well. I just wanted to add one more thing. If you’ve never flown an airplane before, you need to schedule an intro flight before you get any further in the process. Intro flights are supposed to be a relaxed learning experience, but they are also the best way to determine if you’re cut out for this.

Contact any flight school to schedule your intro flight. Do some research on the school while you’re at it. Finding a school with a good reputation and a proven track record is just as, if not more, important than the intro flight itself.
