Prospective ATP student, I’m wondering if I could ask if anyone knows if cadet programs are still accepting people. My goal is the Envoy program, and I assume after training and flight instructing covid will be long gone anyways.
Also, does 100-120 hours per month as a CFI sound realistic? Just trying to figure out how much of the budget stretch will affect us and for how long.
From what I understand most (if not all) of the Regional cadet programs are temporarily on hold. Hopefully with the virus out and as the airlines begin to recover they’ll resume.
100+ hrs as a CFI is a bit on the high side (but not impossible). The average ATP instructor is more in the 75hr range. You need to understand that the amount of hours you’ll instruct each month is based on enrollment which can vary considerably from month to month.
When thinking about budget, don’t forget that as a CFI you’ll be paid for other than flight time as well. According to the website…
I found this helpful when I was looking at the budget as well. So 75 hrs Flt Time plus ground time for each of those flights as well as some Sim time each month. Then bonuses for doing a great job towards you students never hurts.

ATP instructors earn the following hourly rates for flight, ground, and simulator (AATD), plus bonuses for their students’ successful checkride passes.
$18 / Flight Hour
$15 / Simulator (AATD) Hour
$15 / Pre- and Post-Flight Briefing and Ground Hour
When applicants pass a practical test on the first attempt:
$125 Bonus for Private, Instrument, and Commercial
Welcome to the forums. I would plan on 75-80 hours per month as a CFI. While some have done more than that, it is really difficult to do so. Remember though that your months can swing widely when instructing.
I think that many of the cadet programs have suspended enrollment for the time being, but my speculation is that they will resume in full force once the industry turns around.
