Driving Record

Hi Everyone,
Do you have any idea of what driving records the guys are concerned about? DUI, DWI, Speeding Violation or points on drivers license? I appreciate your time.

Issifu.

Issifu,

All of it, but especially DUIs, reckless driving, etc. The airlines look at driving records as being indicators of your ability to play by the rules, something that is very important in aviation. This is not to say that a few tickets or even one DUI are the end of the world, but a pattern of repeat violations is not going to be looked upon well.

Chris

That’s helpful, thanks.

If you have specific concerns I would be happy to address them.

Chris

Chris,
I have one speeding violation, improper turn and disobey traffic device and each of them has resulted in points accumulation on my license. Is it a big deal?

Also, do you know the cost of each of the written exams?
Thanks again.

Issifu.

It all just depends on the total picture. How long ago were the incidents? Is there a pattern? Can you show a period of clean driving after the incidents? This will be taken into consideration along with the other items that make you attractive to an airline recruiter.

Chris,
Ok your answer gives a good picture as to what to do. Well, I’ve been driving since 2011. I have 5 tickets in total. One in 2014 and four in 2015. Sounds bad but New York City Taxi driver couldn’t avoid it. I’ve been convicted of two of the tickets and three are pending hearing. No ticket in this year so if I understood you well then I need to be careful to keep clean record from now to show that I’ve learnt a lesson from the past.

Issifu,

I will be honest my friend, that is a lot of speeding tickets in a very short period of time. I think that you will need to show several years of a clean driving record before an airline will give you serious consideration.

Chris

Chris,
Thanks for your honesty but you misunderstood me. They are different violations altogether. Only one is speeding ticket.
Issifu

What are the other violations for?

Chris,

  1. Speeding
  2. Improper turn
  3. Disobey traffic device
  4. Fail to signal lane change
  5. Exit highway through ramp.

Issifu.

Issifu,

I would refer back to my earlier statement, I think that this record could be construed as showing a pattern of willfull disregard of the law, which an airline is very likely to look disfavorably upon. I think you need to show several years of absolutely perfect driving before applying to the airlines.

Chris

Thanks again.
