I’m very interested in obtaining my pilots license and my dream is to be a commercial pilot. However I’ve had a few mistakes in my driving record that I am afraid might hinder me from becoming CA. In 2009 I received a misdemeanor for failure to obey a traffic light. In 2010 I received two separate speeding tickets. In 2013 I received a stop sign violation and in 2015 I was charged with a DUI. Obviously this looks bad. Real bad. I haven’t had a sip of alcohol since my 2015 incident and have been squeaky clean since then. Are my past driving issues going to prohibit me from getting a commercial pilot job anywhere? Should I throw this out the window and pursue something else? Is there any chance I get hired? Appreciate the help.
I’m not going to lie, you will not have an easy time. DUIs are never good and then factor in your issue with following the rules and regs. Neither would make an airline enthusiastic about handing you the keys to a $50mil jet. On a positive note there is a pilot shortage and the Regionals are being much more liberal then ever. If I were you I’d reach out to some of the Regional recruiters, be honest and see what they say?
Going to a Major however probably is not in your future.
I think that your rather extensive record could very well hinder you from a career in aviation. The DUI is bad, plus coupled with all of the other violations shows a pattern of willful disregard for the law. I would recommend contacting the recruiting departments of several regional airlines and asking them.
