Earliest to enroll

I know you have to be 17 to receive your ppl, but could I start it right now while I’m 16 and then I’d be done with it after I turn 17? Also, could I enroll early to atp just so I can get that extra study in before I start and knock out my written exams?
Thanks, Tyler

Tyler,

In theory, yes. You could. But keep in mind ATP requires applicants to be at least 18 with PPL + 78 hrs, or 2 years of college or 2 yrs work experience. So, if you were to start now you would have at least a year before turning 18. You would need to be flying regularly to keep your skills up. If you’re serious about enrolling at ATP, they won’t credit an instrument rating; only a PPL.

We recommend getting your degree first because it’s easier to get it out of the way before starting training. The other option would be to get your 2 yr degree and finish your 4 yr online while at a regional.
