January, 2024 Schedule

Lucas,

I’m sure Chris will chime in but I need to comment on your statement above. You’re assuming that EVERY pilot has the same goal. While upgrading (or flying a heavy, etc) may be your goal, EVERY pilot is different as are our goals. It’s not that junior Capts get “treated so badly”, it’s simply for many of us, quality of life is our top priority.

I’m a 717 Capt/Check Airman and have zero intentions of leaving the plane. I could easily hold widebody Capt and I wouldn’t even be that junior. Sure the extra money would be nice but it isn’t enough money to change my QOL, BUT changing planes would. Many have reasons to remain in the right seat (schedule, commute, type of ops, etc etc), the list goes on but it’s a decision pilots make for themselves and no one can say what anyone’s goals are or should be.

Adam

Hi Adam!

Appreciate your input! It was not about to throw every pilot in one pot. Just in general, I assume the longterm perspective of pilots is to command an aircraft at a certain point in life and airlines in general hire cadets to upgrade their Fo’s at a certain point to replace retirements and keep up with expansion plans.
Totally understand, priorities shift due life circumstances, and that career perspectives might differ from individual to individual!

I do not life in the US and my intentions basically just were - how does it work in your country. My knowledge about the states is soley based on aviation platforms and recruiters so I’m thankful for every input from active pilots, especially from experienced pilots as you!

Lukas

Lukas,

The beauty of the aviation industry, you can make it what you want. Some pilots take the first upgrade right away, some enjoy being a senior FO and getting the schedule they want, some people want to fly the biggest plane they can and others just want to fly cool places. Others want to do day turns and be sleeping at home as much as possible while others work at the training center, leadership positions in the chief pilots office, etc.

Typically the most junior Captain positions have the longest road to a nice quality of life. The pay is great but there is less movement with limited retirements compared to the FO side with pilots moving all over fleets and seats.

I really enjoy seeing pilots schedules. It helps to understand what QOL I could expect after a few years at various companies. Any chance we can get an update?

Matthew,

We’re happy to share, glad you’ve taken the opportunity to review and check them out.

Brady

Matthew,

Ask and you shall receive. Thank you for the reminder. I just posted two more months worth.

I really appreciate this. I’m looking at this company and based in IAD as soon as possible. I know I’ll have to wait a few (many) years until my number allows your schedule. It still helps to see what the general QOL can be in the industry. Thanks again Chris, Hannah and Brady.

Matthew,

I am still relatively new to United and IAD. I was hired in Feb 2023, so 15 months of seniority right now. I’ve been holding a line since January. Feel free to take a look at my schedules.
