Is it’s realistic to live hundreds of miles from an airport and get a job? I live in a rural town in Michigan I have a small airport within 2 hours from me. Is it realistic to think I wouldn’t have to move closer to Detroit, Chicago, or other large city to get a job?
Keith,
Well first off, what type of job are you looking for? What are your goals with said job (career progression, promotions, etc.)? Benefits?
If you’re looking to be a pilot, commuting can be a challenge - especially out of smaller airports AND quality of life may be disrupted because you have to commute the day before and after a trip. Smaller airports sometimes have restrictions to larger airports especially if they’re short hops, so you may not be able to “non-rev” to work. At that point, it would make sense to live closer to a base.
If you’re looking at a ground staff position, I’m sure they have openings nearby and you could always progress into a leadership role or grow to the larger base.

Keith,
The airlines don’t care where you live. You can live on another continent if you like. Thing is it’s YOUR responsibility to get to work on time and well rested. Your Chief Pilot doesn’t care if you live near a small airport 2hrs away or can walk to the terminal as long as you’re there.

Keith,
If you’re talking flight training, you need to be within 30-45 mins to ensure your schedule is flexible and you arrive prepared/rested. Getting time building jobs could be difficult out there too just due to a lack of opportunity. However once you’ve built time and get hired by an airline or charter carrier, your commute is your commute as long as you’re there on time and rested to fly.
