Hi, im currently a freshman in highschool, wanting to become an american airlines pilot. Right now im in a 4 year aviation program that my school offers, but I want to get to know more about the steps to becoming an airline pilot, how many years it takes during flight school and when can I start flight training? I’m 14 and want to start training as soon as I can. Thanks!
Cayden,
At 14 the best thing you can do is focus on doing well in HS and then college. A good education is vital and yes, airlines like American will want to see good grades. As for questions about the career, here’s a good place to start: How to Become a Pilot – Steps, Cost, & Eligibility / ATP Flight School

Cayden,
Your current age and life events, you should be focusing a lot on high school and excelling in all aspects. Do well in your classes and score the best as possible on the SAT and attend a college for a degree. Adam posted the link on the steps and enrollment process.
I’m also curious, a high school that offers a 4-year aviation program. Elaborate please…
Brady
My school district has a 4 year aviation based class, that can go from freshman to senior. You get to learn about the different parts of a aircraft and history. In your junior and senior seasons, you get to take trips to the airport and fly planes, fix planes, and work with the simulators.
Very cool!
Adam
Cayden,
So, a STEM program focused around aviation, that makes sense. Your OP made it sound like there was certificates involved. I wish more high schools would get involved with STEM programs as aviation is a growing industry. Still, an awesome opportunity.

I did not know my post would blow up like this but I’m really happy a lot of people have added on and continued the thread!
Things have changed a lot for me thanks to lurking on pilots forums and getting this advice so I’m now a high school senior flying through Sling and Civil Air Patrol and I’ve got almost 20 hours now (ATP will come after uni)! I’ve been pre-admitted to ASU for Air Traffic Management and I’m currently applying to a bunch of universities for engineering/aeronautics. I’m even applying to Purdue for Professional Flight even though I know it’s not the best to do flight training through college. Just wanted to say thanks to all the mentors who responded to my thread and provide a little update!
Cindy,
I am glad to know that you are progressing in your training. Please keep us up to date and remember that we are always here to help answer questions you may have.

Cayden,
That’s a very unique program and something you should take advantage of! Enjoy getting to learn more about airplanes and the aviation industry. Make sure you keep your grades up because future airlines will ask for your transcripts. On the weekends check out the Civil Air Patrol. I feel like you would really enjoy it!

Cindy,
Congrats on your pre-admission to ASU! That’s a big deal. Best of luck with the rest of the application process and let us know when you decide on where you’re headed!
