Question about logging hours

When a pilot in a large airliner is acting as first officer, are the hours are SIC, or are there hours that are logged as PIC or as “safety or under the hood and are these hours are just as good as any hours logged in the total hours?

Im sure the Mentors will be with you soon but per 61.51 PIC time would be when (e)(1)(i) you are the sole manipulator of the controls or (e)(1)(iv) when the pilot performs the duties of PIC under the supervision of a qualified PIC and for SIC time it would be under (f)(1) is qualified and occupys the seat of of a crew member station in an airplane that requires more than 1 pilot.

I can only assume ATPs fall under the same FARs

Sean,

FOs log SIC time, Capt’s PIC. When it comes to moving up the “food chain” PIC hours are more valuable than SIC hours.

So how does it work for FOs when they want to apply for a job but it requires certain amount of hours as PIC?

Sean,

Hence why most FO’s can’t simply transition to a Major from a Regional UNTIL they upgrade. If you look, some Majors (not all) have PIC or even Turbine PIC requirements. That means you need to upgrade to Capt at a Regional first before those Majors will look at you. It’s a process of building time and experience.

Sean,

First officers log SIC time, which counts towards total flight time. That being said, Captain time (sometimes known as PIC) time, is considered to be more valuable

Sean,

If the FOs don’t have the flight time needed for certain jobs, they cannot apply until they do, so they remain FOs until they upgrade to Captain and start logging PIC time.

Are Captains from regional are going to the left or right seat when upgrading to the majors?
Do they have to operate as FO and build time or just do the type ratings training and become captain?

Sean,

When a pilot moves to the majors, they start over at the bottom of the seniority list, which means that they start as First Officers. They can upgrade to Captain when their seniority permits.

Sean,

You don’t “upgrade” to a Major (you upgrade from FO to Capt), you get hired but a Major and they’re a whole different airline. As Chris said you start at the bottom as a new FO until you build seniority enough to upgrade to Capt at THAT airline.
