I am a family man. How long at a time will I be away from my family
Type “Schedule” into the search box in the banner across the top of this page. You can see actual schedules that the pilots who moderate this page are having to deal with. I’ve been researching this a lot and it would seem that if you are looking for a stable schedule, weekends, nights, and holidays off - this is not a career that will work out for you for years since junior pilots get to pick from the scheduling leftovers when the senior pilots are done taking what they want. Even moderately senior pilots seem to endorse a couple unplanned days and nights away from family each month. Of course a lot of that is controlled by the type of company you pick, the homebase you work from, etc, etc. I work in medical and am in the military, I’ve done deployments and 13 hour shifts rotating days and nights in the hospital - so sleeping in a hotel unexpectedly a couple times a month and missing out on Thanksgiving or Easter Egg hunts is kind of something I am just used to and have found other ways to make up that time with my family. The moderators will likely chime in, but the topic of “Flying the Line” and schedules is very well-trodden ground on this forum.
Which airline ?
John,
As Phillip said you should check our schedules but you should plan on being gone half the month. Longer when you’re new.
Adam
John,
Please check out the schedules section as it give a very good idea of what our schedules look like. Pay more attention to mine and Tory’s as Adam’s is not very reflective of most airline schedules.
Chris
I’m special
