Airlines and schooling

I have a question to be a regional airline pilot you have to be 21 so could I get my associates degree then go to atp flight school, get all my licenses then go to a cadet program and be a regional airline pilot, then go get my bachelors while being a regional airline pilot, then go to the majors?

Answered in the other thread.

Adam

Thankyou and also if I get an associates degree then attend atp and graduate and enroll in the envoy cadet program would I still need a bachelors degree?

Ryan,
Right now all the cadet programs are still not hiring… but if you got in the envoy cadet program and are planning to ride the flow to American, you wouldn’t necessarily need a bachelors degree because you wouldn’t have a second interview. However, you would be at the mercy of American pulling the strings of the flow. If it’s moving nicely, you’ll get there eventually but they could pause the flow at anytime or even reverse the flow if we hit another trigger event like we just had.

Ryan,

In theory you’re correct but you would essentially be putting all your eggs in one small basket. So here’s the scenario. You’re at Envoy and for whatever reason AA simply isn’t hiring, but Delta and United are. ALL your friends with degrees are jumping ship but you can’t. They’re at their Major, getting paid double what you are and building seniority while you sit and wait because you couldn’t be bothered to get your degree.

Your call.

Adam

Ryan,

If the AA Cadet program stays the way it was before Covid, if you get hired into one of their regionals, if AA is hiring, it should all work out. But as you can see, there are a lot of "ifs"in that statement and some of them might not come true. Plus, you could decide that you would rather work for FedEx, UPS, Delta, etc and would not be able to go there without a degree. In short, I would not want to see you limit your career options by not having a degree.

Ok thankyou I think it’s best for me just to get my bachelors first before attending ATP.

Hi, I want to become a airlines pilot I am 15 years old and I need trying to continue my career. What do I when I am done with high school? Any suggestions?

Nasir,

Suggestion 1, do well in HS, continue to college and choose a major other than aviation as a fall back.

Suggestion 2: visit our FAQ section and the ATP website and READ! There tons of useful information

Nasir,

Please check out the FAQ section as there is a wealth of information there. Also, ATP’s main website has a ton of information about the career as well.

I also have one more question? My brother wants to become a pilot too. But, he has a IEP can he still become a pilot if he has a IEP or if he is in Special education?

Nasir,

No one will know or care if your brother was in Special Ed. The issue becomes there’s no IEP for flight instruction. He will have to complete all is training essentially on his own and will have no special consideration given for any special needs. If he can do this he can be a pilot.

Adam

Nasir,

Nobody will ever know, or care, if your brother was in Special Education or had an IEP. The problem will come from why he has an IEP (what the underlying medical situation is) and how that will affect his ability to get a first class medical. Also, there are no IEPs in flight school, or in the airlines, so your brother will need to figure out how to succeed without accomodations.

Chris

Hello, My brother wanted me to ask if he can still be able to go to a flight school and become a airlines pilot? He doesn’t have any medical needs he just has a IEP can he still go to a flight school and continue his career? Would they still accept him or can he not become a airlines pilot with a IEP?

Asked and answered. See above.

Adam

I have a question, so if after I am done with high-school and flight school how do I pick what airlines I want to work for? Do I get to just apply or how does it work?

Nasir,

Kind of but it’s actually after you finish flight school and build the required 1500hrs of flight time, then you can apply to any Regional airline you like. However without a college degree you won’t be advancing beyond the Regionals. So if you have a desire to fly for a Major (and you should) you’re going to need a 4yr degree.

Adam

Ok so if I go to college what can I major in that is similar to aviation?

Nasir,

The FAQ section explains the process of becoming an airline pilot. In short, you can major in whatever you’d like.
