I am very hopefully that I can obtain a Class I Medical license, but I have Type I Diabetes. I know the FAA has recently changed their guidelines allowing people with T1D to become commercial pilots, however, I am simply looking for feasibility. I am in what I believe is good health with an A1C at 6.7 and have no history of any diabetic related incidents. I know this this endeavor can be costly, and I want to jump right in, but if my health is going to be an enormous obstacle then obviously this pursuit will be pointless. I’ve been told to reach out to a AME, which I have. I simply don’t want to walk into a doctors office and cross my fingers that this dream can happen.
Are there any diabetic pilots out there that can give me an idea of what are acceptable numbers? Thank you!
That being said, do not over read that link. The only way to find out is to go to an AME. It isn’t a matter of fingers crossed or not, you will need to meet specific criteria and they will be able to issue you a medical or not. I would suspect that they will most likely defer the medical while they ask for more information from your primary doctor.
Regardless of what any pilot’s personal experience is, the FAA looks at every applicant on a case by case basis. As Chris said the only way to be certain is contact an AME.
