Being a pilot and Bodybuilding

I just did my first bodybuilding show and won. I am 27 wanting to get my pro card by 30. Do you think it will be possible to eat my 6 pre made meals a day and get my workout in. Most importantly do most hotels on lay overs have squat racks and machines.

Dominic,

It depends… if you meal prep and can find time between flights to eat, sure. But every day is different.

Some days you fly all morning, other days all afternoon with your mornings free at the hotel. Some days you have a 12 hour duty day with minimum 30-45 turn time with hardly enough time to shove a snack down your throat.

When it comes to hotels, some hotels have great gyms, others have no gym at all. The basic hotel gym has a treadmill, an elliptical and some free weights.

It also depends on your layover time. Some are the minimum 10 hours where your primary focus needs to be on getting rest. Other layovers could be long with plenty of time to get in a workout.

I think you need to evaluate your priories prior to pursuing this career. Flying needs to be number 1.

Dominic,

While I was never a competitive body builder, I was a bit of a gym rat back in the day. Good news is the meals are not a problem, you simply need to pack accordingly. Bad news is even the hotels with the best gyms won’t have the equipment you need (no racks nor free weights above maybe 50lb DBs if you’re lucky). Well you’ll most likely end up doing is finding gyms near the hotels and getting day passes.

The biggest issue really (as Hannah pointed out) will simply be finding the time to work out. You’ll have some kind days and short nights. Further ifv you’re trying to cut before a competition you eating enough calories to stay sharp will have to be your priority.

While you can def stay fit, there’s a reason in all my years flying I’ve never known a single competitive bodybuilder.
