CFI at Multiple Flight Schools

Hello,

I am just finishing up my MEI within the next couple of weeks and getting ready to hopefully begin instructing at ATP sometime next month. Just a quick question, how common is it to instruct at multiple locations? Assuming I even had enough time, would it be possible to instruct at both ATP and some other flight school nearby? Is this even allowed?

Appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Dayson,

Let me ask you a question? You just invested $100k in your flight training right? I’m going to assume you’ve been successful in some part to your instructor(s). How would you have liked it if when you needed your instructor (maybe had a checkride coming up, etc), they weren’t available because you were instructing at some other school?

ATP requires a commitment from not just it’s students but moreso from their instructors and that’s as it should be. While I understand you’re in a hurry, it’s really not all just about you. Further Hawaiian wants pilots who are looking to build skills and experience, not just in a race to check the box.

If you want to instruct at multiple schools, ATP will not be one of them.

Adam,

Thanks for the reply. Totally understand, and I am not saying that this is what I will do, I was just asking if it was something that is typically done. I have gotten mixed answers from other ATP instructors when asking around so really just trying to gauge more people on what the best thing to do is. ATP is where I want to be so I wouldnʻt do anything or commit to anywhere that would cause my focus for students to be neglected. I was more just talking about little side gigs here and there if they ever arose.

Thanks,

Looking back at when I was instructing a few years ago you are kept very busy. In a perfect world, yes you’d be able to fly 100hrs a month instructing at multiple flight schools where you’d make a lot of money while quickly getting to 1500hrs.

In practice this doesn’t work because as mentioned earlier you have a duty to the students you instruct. You don’t need to be available to them 100% of the time, but if you spread yourself too thin you’ll find that your patience as well as your decision making could be effected.

Enjoy flying and enjoy being paid to fly wherever you end up. The hours will come and you’ll be at your dream job before you know it.
