CFI time with pay?

Hello! My name is Levi Golden this is my first post here so please correct me if I’m in the wrong place for posting this. I have been looking on here for a few months, just researching and trying to educate myself and Learn everything I can think of. I just applied to ATP looking at the okc location! I’m excited to learn something new I can definitely call adventurous. My main concern however is that I have read false information, due to the fact that that I’m looking over different threads from different years. From what I can find it looks like if I fast track then become a CFI I can apply to different companies like envoy, frontier, etc. but I would still be a CFI at an ATP location? It seems like they give a certain weekly cash allowance while being a CFI? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Levi,

Great question. Let’s see if I can’t clarify.

The element I think you might me missing is that in order to fly for any airline in the US you need a minimum of 1500hrs flight time. When you complete the ATP program you’ll have approx 250hrs of flight time. That means that while you can interview and even receive an offer of employment from an airline, you’ll still need an additional 1250hrs to meet the required minimums.

Now while instructing for ATP you will be paid but you may also receive Tuition Reimbursement from the airline that hires you to help with the loan payments.

Hopefully that answers your question.

Adam

Thank you Adam that does clarify some. What about seniority? how many hours Carry over when signing up for one of these tuition reimbursements?

Levi,

You gain zero seniority until you actually start training (called your Date of Hire).

Some airlines will give you seniority within your newhire class if you accept a conditional offer but nothing beyond that.

Adam

Levi,

To expand further on Adam’s response, ATP has an explanation on seniority:
