Interested in becoming airline pilot

Hi, i’m a 22 year old male working as a ramp agent at my local airport. I been on and off from school, since i have no clue what i want to study. I recently got really interested in becoming an airline pilot, seeing the pilots everyday and working close by. I’ve never had any passions for any jobs, so I’ve always been confuse in what i want out of life. For certain i avoid office jobs and typical 9-5 boring jobs. I like traveling and seeing new things, i don’t like repetitive mundane jobs.
I read that in order to become an airline pilot, it be wise to first get a bachelors degree in something else entirely just in case you can’t fly anymore, and also because i read some airlines require four year degrees.

What do you recommend me to do if this is something i’m interested in becoming?

Juan,

Major airlines want a degree, Regionals don’t. If you were in school I’d say stay but if your already out you may want to just start flight training then eventually work on your degree while you’re at a Regional. Only problem with that is it takes alot of discipline you did that and if you don’t you could find yourself stuck at the Regional forever. Before anything else I recommend you read the FAQ section of this forum and more important than that you need to schedule an intro flight and go fly.

Adam,

Thanks for clearing up my doubt. My local college offers a Professional pilot technology associate in science degree. It states it prepares me for a career in becoming a pilot, and gives me around 250 hours.
Is an A.A degree enough for major airlines, or do i need to get a bachelor’s?
I know that i still need to start at regional and work my way up.

Juan

Juan,

No the Majors want a 4yr BA/BS. Obviously we’re all partial to ATP on this forum and I would encourage you to do your homework. College flight programs are often very expensive and can take way too long. ATP can get you flying as an instructor, getting paid, with conditional letters of employment and receiving tuition reimbursement in only 9mos. Do some research.

Adam

Juan,

Unless you go through one of American Airline’s regionals that have a flow through agreement to American, you will need a bachelor’s degree for the major airlines.
