Looking forward to start but need help!

Hello, nice to meet you all. I am excited to be starting in a few weeks Aug. 7 at POC. I am coming in with credited private that I earned in November of 2022 and I haven’t flown since then. I want to take advantage of all the resources that ATP has to offer on the student page to be put in a better position once I start, any advice as to what more I could be doing? I already have the Sheppard Air that I’ve been studying as well as refreshing the private pilot stuff. Also any advice you could give would be awesome even though i am excited i am nervous as well, Thank you in advance and I look forward to starting.

Alexis,

ATP is giving you credit for your PPL. That isn’t just a box to check and discount. That’s you showing up Day 1 as a current and qualified PPL.

Reviewing the book stuff is great but you also need to be able to fly as a PPL. I would either go up with an instructor and knock the rust off OR let ATP know and they can possibly arrange for you to come in a few days early to get ready. Regardless Day 1 will is not intended as a PPL refresher, it’s to start your Instrument Training and you need to be ready.

Alexis,

I agree with Adam, you should take a few flights with a local CFI to refresh your private skills. I believe your first flight is a TOL evaluation to get you familiar with the aircraft you’ll be flying (Archer or Cessna). If you did your training in a Cessna and switch to an archer, that poses another challenge. You’ll also want to study the supplement packet you received in your getting started box. You jump right in to instrument specific training, it’s up to you to make sure your flying skills are up to date.

Alexis,

You need to take a few flights at a local airport/flight school so that you are current and refreshed on skills. The Day 1 at ATP is a TOL evaluation, you will primarily be in the pattern at your training center, familiarizing yourself with ATP aircraft and standardization. The time you have now, I would be studying for the writtens using Sheppard Air and completing the ATP Orientation Modules. I think the ATP Orientation Modules are better suited for a refresher than reading a book, they are visual and audio presentations. You will want to be able to answer the Oral Review section in back of your Training Supplement word for word.

Thank you all for the help I will definitely look into getting some flights before then.

Alexis,

I came in with my PPL so I get where you are coming from. I too would recommend a few flights before your start date. Essentially you need to have a flight review and make sure you are to the point where you could pass a private pilot checkride.

Also, get started on those written exams!
