Scheduled a start date!

I just scheduled my start date for August 20th at the FXE location. Took my first intro flight there last week and loved it and my instructor so I decided to take the leap. I am going to get my medical today in a couple hours.

Since I have roughly 3 months to prepare for my training, im curious on what I should start first. I have been lurking on the forums for some time now, and most people mention getting their written’s out of the way first. Can someone explain these a little better for me, I am still trying to navigate around on the self study modules as well.

Also, should I purchase an iPad now so I can use fore flight… etc. Or is that not really necessary.

Thanks all.

Justin,

First off congrats! This is a HUGE step towards your career so kudos.

ATP requires an iPad so sooner or later you’ll need it (Memorial Day Weekend is coming up, I’d check the sales and also this forum for recommendations on which).

As for the writtens yes getting as many as you can out of the way before starting will lighten your work load considerably. If you scheduled your start date and paid your deposit you have access to the King Schools and Sheppard Air study material. It’s really just rote memorization but that’s all you need at this point.

Justin,

I will be starting around the same time but at a different location. Other than purchasing the required items and knocking out the written tests, I’d take a look at King’s IFR Ground School and test prep software. The King training software package IS NOT included for the IFR prep and, after the recommendations of others, I dished out a little extra money to purchase the training software and have found it very valuable for the IFR prep. Purchasing the King IFR training package certainly isn’t mandatory, I’ve just found it very helpful in getting myself better prepared for the written test and, hopefully, for the actual instrument training. Less time in ground school = more time flying.

Trey,

Thanks for chiming in (although while I like the Kings I don’t feel it’s necessary but whatever works for you). Just fyi the flight hours are set so less time in ground school = less time in ground school

Adam

Justin,

With three months of prep time, you should absolutely be able to take care of all of the written exams. Check out this link as it explains the process: https://atpflightschool.com/faqs/acpp-prep-written-knowledge-tests.html

I would purchase the iPad now so you can start becoming familiar with it.
