Update: As of today I am a Private Pilot, very proud at the moment. A few weeks behind due to weather (SoCal right!). Going to enjoy the weekend and hit Instruments Monday. Thanks all.
Major accomplishment! Kudos!
Adam
Edward,
That is fantastic! Congratulations and thanks for the update.
Chris
Congrats Edward!
Update: Passed Instrument today. Major thanks to ATP and my instructors at LGB. Also, TY to the mentors and all those who contribute to this site as it was a major motivator. On to Crew and Commercial.
Edward,
That is excellent news, congratulations!! I am glad that we were able to play some small part in your accomplishment. Thank you for the update, I am looking forward to the next one
Chris
Update: Crew and TAA completed in an 11 day marathon. Reminds me of my Navy/Marine days. Lots of flying thru the California fires and the Arizona August monsoon season. Slightly intimidating but very instructional. CAX study weekend the start Commercial phase next week. Loving it. TY All - Ed
Edward,
Wow, that was fast! thank yo for the update, keep them coming.
Chris
Update: I finished the last required Knowledge Test - (93,95,96,95,90,92) this am. It can be done during school but trust the Mentors and many others when they say âget them done before you startâ. Commercial Checkride next week, it is all going so quickly. Question - IGI or AGI or both? Once again - a big thanks to everyone on this forum.
Fantastic work Ed! Both. Good luck!
Ed,
Great job! I am particular impressed with your scores. Keep up this kind of work and you will do well in the industry.
Chris
While only one of either the IGI or AGI is required to get a Gold Seal CFI, I recommend taking both as it looks good on a resume.
GOLD SEAL FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATES. The specific requirements for the gold seal flight instructor certificate are contained in FAA Orders 8700.1, General Aviation Operations Inspectorâs Handbook, and 8710.3C, Pilot Examinerâs Handbook. Flight instructor certificates bearing distinctive gold seals are issued to flight instructors who have maintained a high level of flight training activity and who meet special criteria. Once issued, a gold seal flight instructor certificate will be reissued each time the instructorâs certificate is renewed. Applicants for gold seal flight instructor certificates must meet the following requirements:
a. The flight instructor must hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating (glider flight instructors need not hold an instrument rating) or an ATP certificate;
b. The flight instructor must hold a ground instructor certificate with an advanced or instrument ground instructor rating; and
c. The flight instructor must have accomplished the following within the previous 24 months:
(1) Trained and recommended at least 10 applicants for a practical test, at least 8 of whom passed their tests on the first attempt;
(2) Conducted at least 20 practical tests as a designated pilot examiner, or graduation tests as chief instructor of a 14 CFR part 141 approved pilot school course; or
(3) A combination of the above requirements. (Two practical tests conducted equal the credit given for one applicant trained and recommended for a practical test.)
Hey Chris - TY for the response. Item C(1), does this mean an 80% first pass rate or interpreted more optimistically - endorsed at least 10 (or more) and had at least 8 first pass checkrides? TY
Edward,
It means that you need to have signed off ten students for various check rides and eight of them need to have passed on their first attempt.
Chris
Update: As of today, I am officially a Commercial ASEL Instrument Rated Pilot. It has been a hard journey so far but has gone by very quickly. Many thanks to numerous individuals who have helped me on this journey. On to CFI Academy.
Way to go, Ed! No one said it would be easy. Good luck at CFI School. Let us know how it goes.

âItâs supposed to be hard. If it wasnât hard, everyone would do it. The hard ⊠is what makes it great.â
Nice job!
Adam
Edward,
That is great! Congratulations and welcome to being a professional pilot! Thank you for the update, please keep them coming.
Chris
Update: CFI complete and passed. I think this was the hardest sustained study effort I have ever made to absorb so much in a relatively short period. Old brains learn hard. Again thanks to all for the resources, advice and sage wisdom. On to Multi. Ed
Ed,
That was fast, congratulations! You will be finished before you know it.
