VFR flying

Hi, do you ever miss VFR flying as an airline pilot?

Ravi,

I think you mean GA flying because I fly VFR all the time in Hawaii.

Honestly I wasn’t sure but I actually went up today with Chris and we had a blast! While it was very humbling, I plan on doing more in the future.

Ravi,

One cloud in Hawaii and they have to do CAT-III landings… all jokes aside, I fly VFR and GA a little when I can. I love doing formation flying and going to brunch/dinner with friends, family, etc.

We do some visual flying, albeit under the auspices of IFR. Visual approaches, and Bay Tours in SFO are fun and a chance to fly by hand.

Honestly I never miss VFR flight rules. IFR flying when cleared for the visual approaches is the best of both worlds!

I’m still the only mentor here, yet to fly into DCA on the River Visual… #babyjet

Take that Cessna (or whatever you have) and fly it already!

Adam

Oh yeah… let me just go buzzing in there as unscheduled operations. :joy:

You going to bail me out?

Now is my chance to sound old. When Adam and I started flying, the River Visual 19 really was a visual, like look out the window and try to talk yourself down lower than you want to be over those bridges so you do not end up high on final. Now it is all coded in the FMC and the airplanes fly themselves down the river.

Noooo, file IFR and make a request!

Don’t get me started! When I first got to Hawaiian we had the “Channel Visual 8L”. To get signed off you had to successfully fly it at night. The approach was a tool ATC would use to work planes in at times of high traffic and required you to maintain speed till 5mi out. It was everyone’s favorite. There are various stories as to why we lost it (I believe there are too many airplane operators and not enough pilots flying) but THAT was an approach!

Adam

Uh… that’s not how that works, LOL. I don’t think that is one of the MD3 Airports.

Never bets hurts to ask. Regardless, never hurts to ask.
