Working as a pilot in my late 50’s - former military pilot

I am a former Navy pilot who planned to go to the airlines after the service but timing didn’t work out so I went into investments. Did well and have a successful business with assistants that allow me a lot of free time and flexibility.

Have about 1600 hrs ME Turbine from the military (25 years ago) and another 1100 flying my own Bonanza (currently).

Thinking about going to the Regionals with hopes of basing close to home (SoCal) and flying for my last 7 years of eligibility as a “side job”.

Recently divorced so time with wife isn’t a consideration. Any suggestions? Is this feasible? I don’t have ATP but have Comm, ME, Instr. thinking if I stay with regionals, I’ll have better chance of becoming more senior faster and having more choice in schedule.

Any constructive suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

Sean,

My recommendation is whatcha waiting for? The Regionals will get you your ATP as part of your newhire training. Pick the one that works best and has a base close to home and get going!

Thanks Adam. I just put in app with SkyWest which is close. I guess I’m just looking for some gouge I might not realize I don’t know.

Sean,

As long as you’re current and have good instrument skills you’ll be fine.

Even though your career is limited time wise, this is an amazing time to start.

Sean,

This one is a no-brainer. Put in your apps. Search for some interview gouges online. If you can speak with a pilot that flies for any of the airlines that you apply to to get the most up to date information, even better.

Sean,

Good luck with your interviews. With your flight experience, you’re highly competitive. There are many free online gouges specific to each airline.

Generally speaking a strong instrument knowledge, plus some research in to part 121 regs (TO & dest alternates, Exemption 17347, rest requirements) plus high altitude aerodynamics and turbine engine theory are good places to start.

If you have any specific questions about SkyWest, feel free to ask.

Welcome back to flying for a living, Maverick! I concur with everything said…. Keep another thing in mind, 91, 91k and 135 ops don’t currently have a retirement age either. Get gouges for your top goals from a few sites online, and get your apps in. You’re going to be a good find/fit for quite a few operators out there!

Sean,

I see no issues at all for you here. In fact, I think this is a good plan. Just keep in mind that an airline pilot position is very much a full time job and not a side job.

Thank you Hannah, I may take you up on that.
