Hello, I am going to want to attend ATP Flight School in the future but I have a question about the scheduling, are you able to have a part-time job while going to ATP to pay for daily needs. And if so will it take longer to complete the program. If not how are you able to pay for need for ATP materials and daily need thing like food and gas?
Orlando,
Can you work during the program? This is America and you can do as you like. Should you work during the program? Absolutely not and ATP is VERY clear that working during the program is HIGHLY discouraged. The Airline Career Pilot Program is an accelerated training program that requires a 100% commitment. Even those who do dedicate themselves to it find it very challenging. If you choose to work, no the program will not take longer. The program timeline is set and it’s YOUR responsibility to keep up. If you’re working and you fall behind that’s on you. You’ve been cautioned against it and you may very well be removed from the program. Bust more than a couple of checkrides and you could completely derail any chances of becoming an airline pilot.
As for how people afford to live, the majority take out additional funds as part of their loan to cover expenses. Other delay their start until they’ve saved enough up cover.

Thanks for responding back, I have two more questions to ask, can you work before and save up so you can do the program without working? And also how long will it take to start the program ( on you first day) after you applied to the ATP Flight school? In how many (Months, Weeks, Days)
Orlando,
Orlando,
Of course you can. You just want to make certain you’ve got the funds to carry you through so you’re not stressing during training.
As for how long it takes to get started there are a few things you need to do for enrollment:
The biggest really are taking an Admissions Flight, getting your finance approval and getting your First Class Medical. All of these could take some time and you also want to make certain the date and location you want are available. You really should give yourself a good 3mos to get everything done.
I also recommend you spend some quality time on the ATP website. There’s tons of great info on there.

Orlando,
Many students take out an extra monthly stipend as part of their loan. I believe the max is $2,000 per month. This money is paid directly to the student and is to be used to help with living expenses. It would be best to contact the admissions department to get specifics on this.
Chris
Ok if you would take the money out to the student from the loan would it start plie more and more money to the loan i don’t really understand. How are you able to take the writens before you start the program because I would like to? And how much money do you think it a good amount to have saves up for ATP needs, because I am a little confused about the loan and what can you do with it. Would you be able to explain it?
Orlando,
Provided you have the credit, the lender will allow you to take it additional funds (above the cost of the program) to cover your living expenses. How much you need is based entirely on YOUR living expenses. We have no way of knowing what those are as we obviously don’t know what you’re expenses are (ie, car payments, credit cards, rent, mortgage, childcare, cable, gas, electric, crack, alimony, gambling or crack addiction, etc etc etc).
You ask about the writtens and again I’ll suggest you visit the ATP website and do some reading. There’s a ton of great info and if you really want to be a pilot you’ll have to have the ability to access information. Get Ahead By Taking FAA Knowledge Tests Before Starting ATP / ATP Flight School
