Graduation to instruction

Upon finishing the 9 months, and looking to start as an instructor I understand that ATP has a number of locations. Is the graduate at the whim of available slots open across the country? Are there waiting lists?

Is it safe to plan that one could graduate and then instruct at the same location? There’s one campus nearby and the next one is about 1.5 hrs away.

Would be interested in hearing from alumni on how many got to stay and how many wanted to stay and instruct, but couldn’t.

Thanks

Brian,

Upon completion of ATP’s ACPP, given you are in good standing and have received an offer to instruct at one of the many locations. You are able to select three choices, ultimately having the option to select, “first available,” if you’re open-minded.

I was fortunate to stay at my location (TTN), I did wait a few months but was fortunate. A few others had to start at another location and then put a transfer request in when the opportunity became available, but for some, it’s worth it. When your goal is to build flight time and get to the airlines, sometimes sacrificing is the name of the game. I was 3.5 hours away from family, rarely went home, but when I did, I made sure to make it worth every second.

There are other job opportunities available out and about; however, that will come with networking and finding that job. There is a list of jobs I’ve posted on another page, let me copy quote them here:

Are ATP openings disclosed or published so students are able to see options and plan?

Brian,

As you complete the program and receive the offer, you will see the available locations, as things change regularly, based on needs.

Thanks Brady, and remind me again, at the end of the 9 months, about how many hours does a student have? Prior to instructing?

Brian,

Brian,

I wouldn’t say you’re at the “whim” of anything. The goal is to build time. ATP is not going to overstaff a location. That hurts all the instructors there. Brady (and I) were both fortunate enough to get our first choice (NJ) because frankly it’s a smaller, not very popular location. If the locations you’re looking at are similar your odds go up. Regardless you need to go into this knowing you may need to relocate or find a gig elsewhere. If you don’t have to you lucked out.

Brian,

Getting offered a job to build time and get paid for it in safe, reliable aircraft you already know is a win-win. This is what ATP offers if you do well in the program. Focus on that and be willing to relocate even temporarily to where the jobs are available. You can surely turn down the offer or sit on a waiting list, but then you’re on your own to find a job.
