Paying for ATP and Type Rating

Hi all,

Came across this page on ATP’s website stating their TX location accepts the GI Bill for ATP and Type Rating training. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the regional that picks up new pilots will pay for these? Just curious if I need to save a little extra after my CFI ratings or if this is aimed at a very select few who for some reason want / need to pay out of pocket for these ratings that can’t get their employer to pay for them.

I’ve heard after covid, many regionals stopped offering it.

ATP Flight School switched the guaranteed instructor position with an ATP CTP course. So any new sign ups for ATP flight school will have that course included. Instructor leads also get it for free.

Sam,

Your regional will include the type rating, but they might require the ATP or the ATP CTP class, it just really depends.

The link you are looking at is more intended for those who are seeking an A320 type rating, which come people do acquire on their own.

Sam,

Some Regionals will provide your ATP, some won’t. There are also many corporate gigs that require one. It’s about having more options.

Sam,
Before COVID, the regionals would provide the ATP CTP course the week prior to starting to indoc and then pay for your ATP and type training after that. Not sure how regionals will be operating once they start hiring again.
For the part 135 charter side, every employer was different. It is getting exceedingly more competitive so I’ll tell you that having your ATP already was a huge advantage in the interview process. I did not have my ATP certificate yet but I did have the ATP CTP course and my ATM written done (through ATP) and my employer allowed me to knock out my ATP rating along with my initial type ride. So the ATP CTP course ATP flight school includes now does set you up well for future employment. Even at the regionals if they continue to provide the course, you will be more qualified if you have that done already plus cheaper to hire for the company.

Sam,

The ATP CTP course is now included in the Airline Career Pilot Program, so you will not need to budget funds for that training post program. As Hannah mentioned, having this completed will make you more qualified (+ cheaper) for a Regional Airline to hire.
