Do majors or regionals care if you get your degree online or in person? I am thinking of going to a flight school like Skyborne or Phoenix East Flight School and doing it in conjunction with Purdue Online. It seems more cost-effective, and I feel like I will get higher quality training as opposed to going to an aviation college.
Alan,
As long as it’s a legitimate degree from a legitimate college they don’t care at all.
Curious who Phoenix East or Skyborne vs ATP, the largest fight school in the country with the most pilots hired by airlines for 40yrs?
Adam
Thanks, Adam, for your quick response. Don’t get me wrong—I would love to go to ATP, but it is too accelerated for me to try and complete an online degree at the same time. Places like Skyborne and Phoenix East, which partner with Purdue Global, are not as accelerated and give their students time to complete their degree at the same time.
Fair enough. But my questions now is why would you want to train AND complete your degree at the same time vs finishing your training, then get college credit for your licenses and ratings and save yourself a whole lot of time and money?
Adam
I completely agree with you, but my parents said I need to pick a flight school that offers an online degree in conjunction with the training because they don’t think I will have time to finish my degree after I finish flight training and get to a regional.
Again fair enough, especially since they’re footing the bill.
That said Id have a conversation. You’d be getting to an airline sooner, gaining VALUABLE seniority and saving them money. This isn’t about going to ATP, train where you like, just be efficient at it.
Adam
Alan,
Traditional or online schooling does not matter, what matters is if the school is accredited or not. Is Skyborne Airline Academy the flight school that originated in the United Kingdom that came to Florida the other year? I can’t say I’ve heard of either Skyborne or Phoenix East very often.
If you’re saying ATP is too accelerated, but you want to work on your certificates and attend college at the same time, devil’s advocate here, but that’s almost the same thing… probably will end up costing you more money in the long run. As Adam mentioned, if you meet ATP’s requirements, why not complete the ACPP then utilize the certificates for the partnered universities that ATP has established with a few colleges:
If you’re parents are paying for a flight school that offers an online degree, why not reinforce them with what I linked above? While it’s nice to have someone helping pay the bill, there are other avenues then doing the route they want you to do. Again, if this is something you want to do, you have to prove to them you’re serious.
Brady
Thanks for the reply Brady. Skyborne is Delta Propel’s flight school, and Phoenix East is a United Aviate partner flight school. They both partner with all the regionals.
Alan,
I know we all got asked this question once in life, where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Brady
I see my self flying for a major/regional I could not imagine myself doing anything else
Alan,
So, Adam and I’s recommendation would be workable if you could have a conversation with the parents and explain to them the pathways of all options. Attend an ACPP like ATP (again doesn’t have to be ATP, any accelerated programs works, we are bias of ATP because they delivered what they promised), use the certificates to obtain some college credits, and complete your studies online for your college degrees. While the regional airlines don’t require a degree, it is preferred at the majors and will make you a stronger candidate if you have a good educational background.
Also, for the two named above flight schools, what sets them apart from ATP? If I were in your shoes, I would look at a flight school with an accelerated program, that has multiple partnerships available that could open the doors to many available options… like tuition reimbursement, pathways, flows, etc. I have a flow in my back pocket as a resource, along with the tuition reimbursement I received from any cadet program I applied, interviewed and accepted.
