Came across this on a CFI renewal course. Food for thought…

That is such a good read! My favorite part,
“It’s no longer about you….” To paraphrase the last bit, it’s about the perception you’re giving the passengers that board your aircraft. They don’t get to know you and read your resume, they only get to see what you look like to decide if they feel safe with you behind the controls.

Interesting read. I have seen a growing trend in the industry to a more casual appearance. Blazers are out and Softshell Karbon jackets are in. It’s become a regular sight in a majority of pilot groups, especially the regionals. Hats are slowly disappearing and pilots who choose to wear them have become a negative connotation. Maybe I’m a bit old fashioned, but how I grew up seeing pilots is how I expect to look when I’m facing passengers. Relaxing the standards cheapens the profession in my honest opinion. We are in the age of business casual, however the flying public still has an expectation of what a pilot should look like. If it weren’t for the obvious LW bag, I wouldn’t have known some of these folks were flight crew. Slipping into the airport lounge incognito is one thing, but North Face jackets have no place as a uniform piece. Highly controversial, but had to be said.

John,
I very much agree with your statements. In the winter, I still wear the full uniform with the hat. We are still required to wear this, but results vary on how well people follow the rules.
