DL suspension

When I was 14 I got my restricted license suspended and after I got it back I got it suspended when I was 16. I have my full license now, but when I went to go get my class 2 med license, the FAA doctor said the FAA needed to review my driving history. Am I still going to get my ppl or do I have to wate till I am 18. (I am currently 17)

Landon,

That’s a question for the FAA and it’s up to them whether or not you’ll get a medical.

Not sure if you’re looking to go beyond you PPL, but newsflash, the airlines don’t like pilots who are incapable or unwilling to obey the law. Frankly if I was on your hiring board you’d be a hard no.

Adam

Landon,

If the Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) deferred your medical, then you need to talk to the individuals at the FAA. You CANNOT acquire a pilot certificate without a valid medical certificate.

In the state of South Dakota when you are driving with a restricted minors permit if you get 1 ticket. It dose not matter the speed or the ticket, you get your drivers license suspended. One of the tickets was for going five over and the other was for 10 over. I have not got a ticket since then. if I don’t get a ticket till I an 23 would they still not hire me.

Ultimately the airlines want to see good behavior, keep a clean sheet since, put some time between the occurrence and you may be fine. This is a question for a human resource or recruiting department. I recommend reaching out to a recruiter and inquiring, might not hurt to inquire a few airlines.

Brady

Landon,

I believe if you remain squeaky clean you should be fine. Just know back to back suspensions isn’t a good look.

As for your “I was only going 10 over…” airplanes have limitations and 5 or 10 over is a bust.

Adam

Landon,

Getting in trouble twice from the moment you get new adult privileges is a bad look. That shows a huge lack of responsibility, maturity and respect for rules… all of which you need to display to be a PIC.

You need to learn from your mistakes and start making more responsible decisions. It’s not a complete career killer on it’s own but if it’s the start of a trend it could be…

What were the reasons for the suspensions? If they were drug/alcohol related, it could be a tough sell since you’re only 1 year since the last offense. Licenses don’t usually get suspended for your average one-off traffic infraction like speeding 10mph over the limit, illegal left turns, etc.

They get suspended for reckless driving and DUI related offenses. This is why they want to see your complete driver record because they will be looking at your overall responsibility behind the wheel of the car over the past 3 years that you’ve been given the privilege of sharing the road with others. Those suspensions could have well been after a number of violations you didn’t learn from.

See what they say. It could very well be a no-go, but that doesn’t mean you can’t re-apply in a few years if you keep your record clean.
