Is there a specific reason pilots use ipads and not just any tablet?
Devan,
I do not remember which airline it is, but I have seen a few airlines with Android tablets. I also remember one airline that switched from Android to Apple because it worked better.
I am an iSheep, so I would say that the airlines and ATP prefer Apple because it works better

Devan,
My understanding is this. A number of airlines (including mine) experimented with different platforms and none could match the reliability and compatibility. As more and more switched to the iPad the various software manufacturers became to only create products for iOS further making it industry standard.
Personally I’m not an iSheep but I must admit it does work well.

Makes sense. Thanks for your time and input
I understand, it would be nice if we could pick and choose what to use as long as its all compatible with each other’s system but it makes sense. Fhanks for your time and input.
Devan,
Frankly I’ll use whatever the airline hands me.

Devan,
Skywest had surface tablets a few years back. They found a lot of the applications weren’t compatible or efficiently running. The batteries were draining quickly and they weren’t reliable. They switched to iPads ever since.
I think most aviation apps are either iOS only or run much better with the iOS software. Plus, the airdrop feature is great for sharing docs between pilots in the flight deck.
We actually just got brand new iPads this month and I know United did as well. We got the option to keep the old one for a very discounted price. Not going to lie, I like being handed a brand new iPad without a dime from my wallet.

Well that makes a lot of sense then. Thanks for the plethora of knowledge. Sense we need ipads throughout fhe training process untill we get to an airline would you recommend getting a used or new ipad?
Devan,
That’s up to you and what your finances can afford. You can add the cost of an iPad in to your initial loan. You will be using that iPad for all your training and time building to the regionals, so don’t get something too used. It needs to last for a solid two years of heavy use.
We recommend either the full size or mini version with Cellular capability. You don’t need to activate or pay for cellular data, just need it to be capable for the GPS tracking.
Hannah
Awesome, thank you for your input.
