I have been convicted with a dui in Canada in 2015 although the incident took place in 2013, will that give me any trouble with becoming a pilot? I was going to register for school next month but am a little worried with my record
Jamie,
This seems to be the new “hot topic” as there appears to be a tremendous amount of bad behavior going on. Short answer is of course this will cause you trouble and yes you should be worried. You were convicted of driving under the influence. Do you think the airlines like handing over the keys to $50,000,000 airplanes to irresponsible people? You should also know that the first hurdle will be getting you First Class medical as the FAA also looks poorly upon drug and alcohol related offenses.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) the Regionals are desperate for pilots and as long as you keep your nose SQUEAKY clean you might be ok, at least at the Regional level. As for the Majors they are far less needy so that could be a bigger issue in the future.
Adam
Jamie,
I am no legal expert, but I suspect that it will be a major stumbling block for you. Are you currently barred from entering Canada? If you are, you will likely not be able to be hired by a US based airline. I suggest contacting the recruiting departments of several regional airlines and asking.
