E6B Flight Computer Part of PPL?

I’m looking to start studying for the Private Pilot written knowledge test (and then eventually the others). Is the E6B flight computer part of that first written exam? What other physical “tools” are on the exam? Just want to make sure I have everything prepared when I start studying?

Scott,

It’s been a while but since I believe an E6-B is the only “tool” (besides a pencil and some paper) you’re allowed to bring with, that’s all.

The E6B is part of the tools you will need for your PAR. I recommend learning with the paper whiz wheel before progressing to any kind of electronic E6B so you have the manual skills. Some examiners will only let you use the paper one so it’s important to know how to use it. You will also get a calculator to use for the weight and balance sections and then the test booklet with all the tables, charts, etc to use with the questions. If you buy the asa study prep book, the booklet comes with it and is a nice asset to have seen prior to the test.

I don’t remember, but it would be nice to bring that e6b, and a plotter.

Theyll give you everything else.

Oh yea, I forgot the plotter!

The plotter! That was the other thing I was going to ask about. I haven’t used a protractor since 8th grade, so this should be fun.

Scott,

I liked the digital E6Bs myself, but it is essential to know how to use the manual one as well. Also, if you go the digital route, you have to actually buy a flight computer, an app on the phone will not be allowed in the testing room as the phone could obviously be used for cheating.

Scott,

As nice as the electronic E6B computer is and using it while needing to crunch those last second numbers, knowing how to manually (aka a “whiz-wheel”) get them is also a good tool to keep. I’ve heard rumors of DPE’s for CFI Initials asking candidates to pull out a manual computer and calculate crosswind or even fuel burn. MZeroA and Fly8MA both have simple videos on how to use those things.

Like Moe said, a plotter is a nice tool to bring with you as there is a chance you will have to chart a course or find you way to/from a VOR.
