I will be setting a start date with ATP very soon, took my intro flight last week and it was awesome… have never been more excited to begin something in my life.
I’d like to be able to complete all of the FAA written tests before I begin. Any info on how long each test is or how long it will take to complete all of them? I’m wondering if a month is enough time.
The time limit for each written in 3 hours, however, if you prepare well it shouldn’t take more than 15 mins. That is from my experience. The pilot mentors will probably have a little more insight into this subject.
While Al’s correct you could physically complete all the written tests in 18hrs or less time wise, I think you’re really asking how much time you need to study and prepare. That is really up to you, the time you have available to study (are you writing fulltime or just having for the next month) and obviously how fast a learner you are and how much you grasp and remember with each run through.
Most people say 2 weeks per exam is sufficient (there’s 6) so that would put you over. If however you’re not working or again are a fast learner you can obviously cut that down. Also know that the IRA and FII are essentially the same test, as are the CAX and FIA, so two weeks would actually cover both (plus a little extra).
Keep in mind there’s no requirement to complete any of the exams (but it is a really good idea). Even if you simply complete the first 2 or 3 it’ll give you a big leg up and lighten your workload considerably.
One tip I can give is take your FII (Flight Instructor-Instrument) immediately afternoon your IRA (Instrument Rating) as the question banks are almost the same. I had 1 new question on my FII but 3 wrong ones from my IRA but as Adam said as long as you study 2 weeks for each is plenty of time.
Once you put down your deposit ATP gives you access to King Schools for private and then Sheppard Air for the rest and Sheppard is a great tool for writtens
It took me around 2 months total to study for and take all the writtens. I’d plan on that if you have any other things going on in life such as work/family,etc.
I would plan a minimum of two weeks study time for each written exam. As Adam said, you don’t need to complete any of them prior to entering the program, but do as many as you can as it will certainly help you.
Thank you all! Gives me a reason to take some time off after my job and enjoy the holidays while studying, so I will be setting up a start date in January instead of rushing into it in December. Very helpful info!
